But we can ask the same question of ourselves: how can we treat our body, our energy, and our capacity in a <strong data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1059\">sustainable way<\/strong>?<br>And how do we prevent ourselves from quietly wearing ourselves out? <\/p><p>Many people react with surprise when I use the word \u201cabuse\u201d in relation to the body. Yet we do it more often than we realize. Habits we\u2019ve had for years can place a hidden strain on us.<br>And it all starts with noticing.  <\/p><p>If you regularly experience complaints \u2014 from sitting, working, exercising, or simply daily life \u2014 that\u2019s often a signal that something isn\u2019t quite right. Not because your body is weak, but because it has been trying for a long time to tell you that something can be different. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0a481dd elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0a481dd\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b4d8c2f\" data-id=\"b4d8c2f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6e0b29 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d6e0b29\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>An example from practice<\/h2><p>Jan is someone with lots of enthusiasm and an enormous drive to exercise. But time and again he ran into pain and injuries.<br>After various treatments, he decided to explore whether he himself could change something. That\u2019s how he ended up with me.  <\/p><p>What I immediately felt was that his muscles were constantly working hard. Not only during effort, but even at rest. As if he lived his entire life in \u201cgale force 9.\u201d<br>When your body is already producing that much force at rest, there\u2019s hardly any room left for extra effort. Then every sporting activity is, by definition, too much.   <\/p><p>I recognize that all too well from the time when I myself constantly had complaints. Relaxation can be a result, but the goal is much deeper: <br><strong>rediscovering the natural cooperation between all your muscle groups.<\/strong><\/p><p>Movement becomes effortless when:<\/p><ul><li>your bones are allowed to do the supporting<\/li><li>your muscles do only what\u2019s necessary<\/li><li>you feel your movement instead of thinking it<\/li><li>you\u2019re not constantly working against yourself<\/li><\/ul><p>When that happens, movement becomes light, simple, and surprisingly elegant.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-119c44d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"119c44d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a826440\" data-id=\"a826440\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f5ee02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7f5ee02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>The role of attention and feeling your skeleton<\/h2><p>In Feldenkrais lessons, you direct your attention inward:<br>how do your bones move in relation to each other?<br>Where do you give way? Where do you hold on? <\/p><p>When you focus on that, your brain can activate exactly the muscles that are needed \u2014 no more, no less. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feldenkraisutrecht.nl\/en\/what-do-you-actually-do-in-a-feldenkrais-lesson\/\">You don\u2019t have to \u201cmanage\u201d it with your thinking.<\/a> In fact, when you try to move from an idea, you often overrule the natural organization of your body. <\/p><p>That\u2019s how you end up in gale force 9: always a bit harder, firmer, more active than necessary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-70db173 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"70db173\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3f0422e\" data-id=\"3f0422e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37f223a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"37f223a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Is it really that simple?<\/h2><p>The principle is simple, but it takes practice.<br>You have to learn to feel when movement is light\u2026 and when you\u2019re pushing against resistance.<\/p><p>That\u2019s why we do a lot of the lessons lying down.<br>Lying down makes it easier to distinguish, because your body is supported by the floor. You can then feel more precisely where movement flows and where it gets blocked. <\/p><p>And then there are beliefs that steer us from the inside. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feldenkraisutrecht.nl\/en\/five-myths-about-posture-part-1\/\">idea that \u201csitting up straight\u201d means<\/a>: shoulders back, back tight, abs engaged.<br>That costs a huge amount of energy and is almost never necessary. <\/p><p>When you learn to trust your skeleton, your support system, space opens up. Your muscles can do their real job: moving, not carrying. <\/p><p>I often see people change enormously in a short time because of this.<br>And Jan? He\u2019s back to exercising with pleasure. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bdd62fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bdd62fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Do you recognize any of this?<\/h2><p>Do you regularly feel discomfort, tension, or overload?<br>Or do you notice that your body struggles more than you\u2019d like?<br>Feel free to respond.
