Individual Session – Functional Integration

Sometimes you notice that your body is asking for more attention. Maybe because of pain, stiffness, or because moving no longer feels effortless. When fluid movement becomes more difficult, an individual session can help to look very precisely at what is limiting you, and at what may become possible again.

In a one-to-one session there is time, calm, and focused attention to explore and support your movements in a way that isn’t always possible in a group class.

What makes an individual session special

I have been working for decades with people who long for lighter movement and more ease in daily life. In these sessions I use my hands the way I use my voice in group classes: to give direction, to listen, and to invite.

The touch is gentle, clear, and precise enough to help your body sense where it is holding on and where space wants to emerge. It’s a subtle form of learning, in which you don’t have to perform — only to experience. Many people describe it as if their body is having a conversation without words.

My intuitive perception supports this process. Often I quickly sense where an important turning point lies: a place where something gets stuck, or where movement can begin again. That brings both insight and a tangible sense of new possibilities.

How a session unfolds

We always begin with your question: where do you want more ease? Which movement feels difficult? Which situation brings tension or pain?

From there, we explore a suitable movement together. First, we look at how things are now. What already works? Where does resistance arise? Which parts of you are doing more than necessary?

Then I work with small, attentive touches. Sometimes these are movements you don’t expect; sometimes they are very simple. This makes it possible to soften long-standing patterns that you often don’t even notice anymore.

As your muscles begin to cooperate differently, movement changes almost by itself. You feel more space, more lightness, more ease. At the end, we return to the initial movement so you can directly experience the difference.

A long time ago, I was advised to see a Feldenkrais practitioner about my “way of walking.” Supposedly it would help. I honestly had no idea what was wrong with my walk — I walked briskly, but dragged my right leg. By then I had already been dealing with knee pain for several years. Physiotherapy, doctors, and detoxes helped only temporarily.

Tjitske invited me to experience my center of gravity from within my pelvis. That made an immediate difference. I also discovered that the knee I had trouble with was behaving autonomously instead of being part of the connection between foot–ankle–knee–hip. Changing that made a huge difference. What surprised me was that, on the way to this insight, I first needed small fragments of awareness before I could experience it as a whole. I am a different person now.

More relaxed, walking feels smooth (in a different way than when I was younger). With her expertise and skilled hands, Tjitske has helped me enormously to regain my enjoyment of cycling and walking — things I always loved. Now without pain.
