For many people, relaxation has almost become a necessity in these busy times. How nice would it be if you not only felt more relaxed, but also noticed your movements becoming lighter, more fluid, almost flowing — as if your body moves along by itself?

In this Feldenkrais lesson series Learning to relax in movement, you don’t consciously focus on relaxing. While moving, your muscles gradually start to work together more effectively as you direct your attention to lightness and ease. Movement then becomes easier on its own, and at the end of each lesson you’ll usually notice that you’ve relaxed more deeply than you might have thought possible beforehand. You’ll feel that immediately in how you stand and walk. And because movement brought you there, the relaxation lasts longer than with direct relaxation exercises.

The six lessons

  1. Creating space by searching for ease: hand through the air to the back with variations – side-lying
  2. Connecting foot and hand through the skeleton and into rolling – lying on your back
  3. Connecting arm and leg through the torso
  4. Waking up your spine: pre-crawling and head through the gateway – lying on your stomach
  5. Starfish movement
  6. Creating space in the flank: sideways movement
